Working Class, Off the Clock
In the following body of work I portray the lives of working class trades men outside of work. I use intimate, environmental portraits to show not only who these people are as individuals, but as a social class of people. The portraits were taken in environments that had meaning to the individuals, places they go to relax and unwind after work, such as sheds, garages and back decks. The portraits show their charismatic yet rambunctious lifestyles and personalities. Without the sacrifices of working class trades men, the world would be without basic necessities.
I used natural light and fill flash when necessary to make the photographs as true to the environment as possible. I also spent much time with these individuals before taking their photographs to get a sense of their personalities in order to achieve better portraits true to whom they are. The series “Working Class Trades Men Outside of Work” is important because is shows the lives of the individuals who make up a huge part of our culture and contribute so much to the world and how it operates.
